Role Conflict in Groupware
نویسنده
چکیده
Groupware and computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) systems are usually considered collaborative, but some kinds of group activity can actually be competitive. People can have different roles which conflict because they are trying to satisfy different intermediate goals associated with their roles, even though there may appear to be a single consistent goal. This paper examines the differences between systems with one role and with several roles, how this potential conflict between the different roles arises, and provides a number of design rules to reduce the problems of this conflict. These rules are illustrated by an example of a large collaborative system involving many different roles.

Addressing the Conflicting Dimension of Groupware: A Case Study in Software Requirements Validation
This paper addresses the conflicting dimension of groupware, seeking the reconciliation of two very different assumptions about the users’ attitudes using groupware tools: users either collaborate or negotiate to reach consensus. We argue that groupware should integrate the full spectrum of attitudes occurring between these two extremes. The designed solution integrates content and process supp...
متن کاملAn Early Evaluation of Technical Mechanisms Supporting Negotiations in Groupware
A set of design principles for groupware will be proposed. As some of these principles conflict with each other, a "suitability for conflict regulation" will be introduced as an additional principle which proposes to design groupware so that users can regulate conflicts among themselves. According to this principle, we propose negotiability as a technical mechanism to support users regulating c...
متن کاملGroupware Developers Need More Than Replicated Objects
This position paper addresses the question whether existing frameworks for single user application development can generally be used on top of an OOGP as they are. The paper negates this question by using the example of synchronous document-based groupware (SDBG). Some SDBG-specific requirements for a groupware platform architecture are postulated and it is shown how these requirements conflict...
متن کاملGroupWare, an approch of improving organizational learning capability in the university (case study: Farhangian University)
Introduction:This study was carried out to investigate the role of group wares in increasing organizational learning capability in Farhangian University. In order to investigate the effects of deterrence (barriers) or promotion (facilitation) of the group ware and information technology on organizational learning capability was studied. Methods: The present study was performed by mixed method. ...
متن کاملImplementation of Groupware Technology in a Large Organization – implications from an empirical study
This paper is based upon an extensive empirical study of the introduction and use of a groupware application in a large organization. The implementation of the groupware raised a number of conflicts in the organization and it was only partially adopted. We discuss how a model of implementation and change management, which introduces a distinction between an organizational/infrastructural level ...
